I like riding a bike, but I sweat too much to ever use it for a morning commute. There's no place for me to shower at work, and I would be entirely too disgusting by the time I got there. It wouldn't be a problem going home. But it would never work going to work in the morning.
This is kind of extreme but I have 50 mile RT bike commute (about 25 miles, 1:30 each way) and no shower. I use a body wipe (picture man-sized baby wipe that doesn't smell like baby) product called "showerpill" and it works really well. I drive at least 1 day a week (60 miles, 2:15 RT) and bring clothes. It works fine. Helps that I have my own office but at client sites I just use the restroom. I know daily suit wearers that have similar commutes and no showers.
Funny, I could've written this. Another pro-tip: hand sanitizer for your armpits when you arrive. Keeps them from getting stinky. Look, there's two options here: one, you can ride your bike and be a little sweaty when you get in. or two, you can die slowly from sitting behind a wheel in traffic. For extenuating reasons I haven't been able to ride for the last 3-4 months, and I feel like I've aged about 20 years. Jesus, I really have no idea how car commuters do it. Killing yourself to live.
No, there aren't ONLY two options. I'm not dying slowly by driving to work. And I sweat way more than most people, especially after working out. Wipes would NEVER cut it, and I work in a shared office, so it would almost be rude to expect people do deal with my BO. Part of my commute used to be a 1 mile walk, and I'd sweat like a fiend doing that (and I'm in shape, I just sweat a lot). So biking just would not work. I'm glad it works for some people, but it's foolish to think that it would work for all people. And I love working out (do so 5 times a week, at least), so I would love the activity. I try to walk during my lunch break, and I sweat so much doing that, that I have to freshen up in the bathroom. But the distance I would have to bike would mean I'd be drenched, hair and all. That said, my commute is about 45 minutes. And it works for me. I drink my coffee, listen to my iPod. I used to take public transportation and probably will again some day, but I needed a break. People talking on their cell phones were pretty much driving me insane. Sure, traffic isn't great, but at least I don't have to listen to people's inane conversations every day. I imagine at some point I'll alternate, public transportation a few times a week, driving the rest. But I'm not ready yet.
