We are PG residents, using the local schools (Gladys Noon Spellman) for the Cheverly area. I have been VERY impressed with the overall standard of the classrooms, the teachers, the behavior and attitudes of the kids in the school, even compared to private schools I've toured because I also worried about PG's reputation for public schools. Aside from the basic infrastructure being "standard school construction", there is not that much difference - although I know we could have been very lucky so far with the teachers DC has had contact with. I don't know all of them. There are new computers in the K classrooms for the kids, one for the teacher, and the set up and material and all the "centers" in the room are comprehensive. The standard of homework is good, and not "busy work". DC was identified and selected for testing for TAG in K, even though TAG doesn't officially start until 2nd grade at the local TAG school. What really impressed me was the way the kids with a higher reading level are identified and either taken to the relevant class level for reading time, or a reading group of similar levels is created for those kids to do reading. Same for mathematics. Makes a lot of extra work for the teachers come grading time, since DC has effectively 3 teachers, and they are doing that for several kids that I know of to keep them challenged and interested, and parents didn't have to ask for it either. They have a violin program for the older grades similar to Arlington county schools (from what friends there have said), a band, school-wide (K-6) dance/singing productions, music 5 times every 2 weeks, PE 5 times every 2 weeks.....and all this in a school that has a student body composition where many parents do not speak English and which qualifies for every single child in the school to receive a free breakfast. Which they can all get if they want to. And it is not bad food either. I love the "fruit of the month" and the "vegetable of the week" or whatever it is. DC told me how to prepare artichokes the other week. The teachers I know have all completed or are doing a masters, many have some kind of TAG training qualification. Cheverly is very lucky to have a school like this here, and it is a PG PS. The parent body started getting involved several years ago and has done a lot as well. So I'd say, definitely check out the individual schools before putting a blanket-ban on the whole county. For MS I don't know (other than a TAG school that is K-8), but Roosevelt high is where the nextdoor girl went and all her friends, who all babysat for us at various stages, and all reports that I have heard about Roosevelt HS from parents and students say good things. Okay, longer than I meant it to be, but hey.
