Hi, I worked for FCPS for close to 15 years prior to switching to ACPS. At the time I left I wanted a smaller district, and I wasn't thrilled with some decisions Dale was making (how he was making them). I had worked for both Spillane and Domenech, prior to Dale. In ACPS, I happen to work for a wonderful principal; I do though live in fear that a switch could suddenly be made, because the ACPS superintendent has been known to move some staff around, and teachers aren't in the know as to the why. So....am I happy I made the move? Yes, I am. At times I am frustrated with issues within ACPS, but I am closer to home now. The pay scale is a bit better in ACPS. The number of days worked is more (including student days and teacher work days). The PD can be frustrating at times...there seems to be more of it here, and a good chunk is wasted time (issues with many consultants and too many programs...I don't recall this many while I was in FCPS). Depending on the school, you will have some intense parental pressure, or a very needy student population. A few schools have a balance of both. I think job fairs are coming up fairly soon, so you might want to complete the on-line application... If you have specific questions, please feel free to write a follow up post. When you transfer from another VA district, you do transfer unused sick leave, and you start off on the 3rd year of probationary status, if you have tenure in your current VA district. That means you would not have to have 3 years in a row of evaluations prior to being on contract status; instead you would simply have one year like that...your first year in ACPS. The state itself is now going to a 3 year cycle of evaluation, which ACPS uses anyway. What level are you looking at? ES, MS or HS?
Thanks for the very helpful input! It's hard to imagine more PD than FCPS........It has increased by far in the past 2-3 years. I'm looking at ES, and I plan to get my online application up this weekend. Do you know if it's acceptable to also send my resume to specific schools I'm interested in, or do I need to wait to be contacted?
