Knowing this expression is a matter of basic cultural competency. Don't have to be smart and clever. Just don't use big words and expressions unless you have a clear understanding of what you are saying. Seriously it's good advice. Using simple words and phrases will actually make you appear smarter.  You may hate me saying it, but in the back of your mind you know I'm right. [/quote]

Such colloquial expressions are a minefield by anyone speaking any non native language. I have many warm hearted stories about ancestors mis-stating such expressions!  Best used among family and friends. If you are a non native English speaker I applaud your efforts and only encourage you![/quote]
