Wow, thank you guys so much. I have a pretty thick skin and figured I was setting myself up for some insults, at the very least of the "Troll!" or "Attention Whore!" variety, but everyone's being so nice. Really, thank you. *warm fuzzies*
Yeah, there's something we're missing. The BMI for 5'10" and 188 lbs is 27, which is definitely in the overweight range. What is your weight first thing in the morning, naked?
This morning, 187.2. My weight fluctuates within a 15-pound range, and I'm at the high end of that right now. I feel much more comfortable around 175. The comments are making me think that body proportion and how your clothes fit has a lot to do with whether a person looks heavy. When I stand next to my petite friends, I look enormous and you wouldn't have any trouble believing I'm overweight. But out of context, by myself, I guess I look fine. For instance, the boots are wide-calf, so I don't look crammed into them.
I am also a size [14] but was once a size 24. I won't wear leggings at all now because I had to wear them when I was obese with longer tops and tunics. In fact,if you look at the fat lady clothing store catalogs and websites, this is a standard look. So for me if you can't tuck the shirt into the leggings or you need a shirt that flairs over your hips/butt it's a fat lady look.
I also used to be a 22/24 (I had gastric bypass surgery), and I sometimes wonder if I'm more confident about my current size than a lot of my non-plus-size peers because I've been to the other side and know how far I've come. I hope you're proud of how much weight you've lost! (But I have jiggly loose skin on my thighs so I avoid thin pants, as well. The thickness of jeans is like a built-in girdle.)
I am a size 10, down from a 14, but still can't find boots that fit over my calves and especially not over calves plus jeans. You are lucky.
Look for wide-calf boots! Yeah, it's kind of a blow to the self-esteem, but whatever, everything just looks better if it fits properly.
For all of us in your size range OP - can you list brand of boots and pants?
Boots: Alfani Jessa wide-calf boots from Macy's -- http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/alfani-womens-shoes-jessa-wide-calf-tall-riding-boots?ID=716015&CategoryID=31917#fn=BRAND%3DAlfani%26sp%3D1%26spc%3D1%26ruleId%3D22%26slotId%3D1 The jeans are from Metrostyle, 14 Tall. I got them a couple years ago, but I think these are the same ones, just not in black -- http://www.metrostyle.com/item/40392/500622/modern-fit-skinny-jean-misses
