The number of students that accepted to be listed in the magazine are about 60 out of ~100. My kid ('26) knows at least 3 more accepted at UMD and not in the magazine. He never heard about a colleague being accepted at MIT and going to UMD (that person might very well exist).
We'd probably choose UMD over MIT because of the cost and wanting to pay for grad school. Not everyone can pay $100K a year.
I was so stressed out during acceptance time because if DC had been admitted to MIT, I wasn't sure we could say no. They got an interview, and the interviewer had gone to the same school as DC. In the end, DC was rejected, but if they had gotten in, we were thinking we'd say yes. But, if we did that, we'd have to be willing to pay that much for DC#2 college. That would've impacted our retirement heavily. DC went to UMD, and they are very happy there and has an amazing internship this summer. So, it worked out, so far.
My kids know what we can afford and not. We will have them apply but they know it has to be something we can pay cash for and still have money for grad school. I'm ok with it impacting retirement as we will not retire till they are done with school which means we will be late 60's or older.
