In my hometown, there is a huge, abandoned mall. It had three “anchor” department stores, multiple large restaurants…it was huge. Now it’s completely empty, crumbling, and the location of a lot of encampments, crime, and drug deals. I would give anything for that big complex to once again be a place where: 1) Older adults could walk to stay healthy, strong and connected to one another 2) People could try on clothes, which cuts down on the environmental footprint of shipping and returns 3) People could have jobs, from makeup counters to jewelry stores to bookstores to coffee shops to restaurants to eyeglass shops 4) Creative spaces like art galleries, Paws at the Mall (ASPCA in the Annapolis Mall), kid-friendly museums and interactive exhibits could exist 5) Teens and tweens could hang out in a relatively safe environment, if they are responsible and can stay connected to family through their cells Etc., etc., etc. With people like OP, you can’t win. She’ll complain about “welfare people with no jobs” (then sneers at mall jobs); she’ll complain that “kids are always on the phone and don’t have real life friends” (then complain if they’re a little loud or clueless when they walk around); kids are inactive (then complains when they walk around with friends and—dare to exist, what with fashion choices and all); GAS PRICES OMG (never mind that people are saving gas and environmental footprint by trying on and buying in person). Shut up, OP.
So many good points here. This is a lot of what is wrong with snooty DC society. Do you want a safe place for older folks to walk, or don’t you? Do you want a safe place for teens to walk around and spend their allowance? Doo you want there to be restaurants and movie theaters nearby? Do you want people to be employed, or do you want yet more people to lose yet more jobs?!
