I grew up in Arlington, went to Wakefield at the tail end of the village feeling. Fair Housing drove out a lot of people in the late 60s and 70s. People and neighbors still knew each other. Now nobody does, it's all very anonymous with drifter professionals coming and going. Vietnamese settlements opened up businesses in the Clarendon area (it was called Little Saigon). Then the orange line wiped it away with higher rents and they moved further out into the sticks at Eden Center. I-66 added to the highway-fication of Arlington. Rosslyn actually was decently scaled and walkable. Now it's a corporate hellscape. Actually, much of NOVA has become a corporate hellscape. Yorktown and WL were actually pretty good schools. Wakefield was on the downward spiral. Now they are all on the downward spiral.
+1 I can’t stand these new ultra striver professionals that moved here to make a ton of money and raise their kids to be insufferable dbags. Corporate hell scape is an apt description. Speaking of 66 if I have to deal with another stupid Tesla acting like they are the only person who exists I am going to lose it.
Rosslyn was once a den of iniquity where prostitution and gambling ran rampant and people were murdered on their way out of DC. I’d say we’re doing pretty well there these days.
Yes. I will say that taxes have gone up a lot in the 25 years I've lived here (moved from Bethesda and would never move back to MD), but it's still incredibly safe and has a great quality of life.
