Is med school like law school where there is a preference for kids from the undergrad? It would appear based on these lists where Harvard med is #1 feeder for Harvard undergrad…and it’s literally the same for all the schools. It’s also curious that UPenn is #1 med school for Haverford and Swarthmore. Is it because that’s where all these kids do hospital work?
it's familiarity with the city where the students do their undergrad and clinical experience, which translates into who they ask for letters of recommendation. at every level, it's hard to distinguish highly accomplished students but the letters (especially if you know the writer) carry a lot of weight. i'm an academic surgeon and if i'm interviewing someone for med school, residency, fellowship, or faculty position and i know their reference who writes a glowing letter, of course i will contact them for more info.
