I think the idea is that they were not close to him at all. They saw him as an ATM. He had a "great" relationship with his wife, but even there there was a sense that it was a superficial relationship: she didn't care to know the side of him he showed in Montana or to go out of her way for him. I think the show does have a lot of depth in the sense it shows how shallow the entire family was, without spelling it out. The viewer has to read between the lines. Michelle Pfeiffer is putting her dh on a pedestal, but was he really all that great? People at his memorial gathering didn't seem too heartbroken at all, plus he had to be ruthless to acquire this sort of extreme wealth. His brother ultimately is the one who got to see his funny, authentic, relaxed and caring side.[/quote]
