I don't think they knew the crew would be altered. Clearly things didn't work quite as expected given the other two died and all.

He had the hacky sack, clothes (all the t-shirts seemed like something he'd own, not one of the other crew), and the pictures from kids (though I guess those weren't necessarily his students). In the book, he never packed personal things due to the circumstances in which he ends up on the mission.[/quote]

They injected something in Grace to cause temporary amnesia when they forcibly placed him in the coma really to put him on the ship against his will.  This was covered in the book - they didn’t give it to the other astronauts so presumably they figured they would read him in.  But obviously they died.[/quote]
