Clearly things didn't work quite as expected given the other two died and all. He had the hacky sack, clothes (all the t-shirts seemed like something he'd own, not one of the other crew), and the pictures from kids (though I guess those weren't necessarily his students). In the book, he never packed personal things due to the circumstances in which he ends up on the mission.[/quote]
