For some families anything less than cut throat environment is considered slacking off and not rigorous enough. This means students need to work their tail off every day and weekends. These families would love Haycock. If you are the more laid back type, this is hell.
Sigh. Haycock is not cutthroat. At all.
You’re joking, right?
No. I am not joking. I have had multiple kids go through the school. It used to MUCH more demanding but even back in the day I wouldn't have ever called it cutthroat.
Fair enough. Maybe cutthroat is subjective. But when elementary school starts feeling like a résumé-building exercise, I think the word is at least in the neighborhood.
DP. Do you know how silly you sound?
Well it’s true. And if you’re not adding to the conversation, maybe you should keep your opinions to yourself.
I am the PP who said it was not cutthroat, but not the one who said you sound "silly." Over the years at Haycock, the standard amount of homework has hugely fluctuated. And it has always varied from teacher to teacher. There have been many moments when I thought the quantity was simply too high, too much busy work, too intrusive. There are times when I feel like AAP is set up for kids with executive function strengths rather than kids with a lot of curiosity. I assume parents complain about homework because then pendulum swings and there have also been moments when I can't believe how little homework there is. If I had a nickel for every time I have wished for a happy medium... But as far as feeling like a resume-building exercise, I just don't and cannot relate to what you are saying. When I see the number of kids who have tutors (some to remediate, others just to be able to keep up, still others to get even farther ahead), I think, "these poor kids." And sometimes I see the projects that kids put together and am blown away and then look at others that seem like they are done by parents and, again, "these poor kids." But you can say "No" to all that. Plenty of us do. My kids weren't winning national awards along the way but they have certainly gotten good grades and done well for themselves.
