I have bad social anxiety. I also have an elementary aged child, a middle schooler and a highschooler. Your social anxiety does not get better but your interaction with others becomes less because the children do the heavy lifting once in middle school and high school. Do you have a supportive spouse? My husband is VERY social. When the kids have a birthday party to attend, for example, he will tell me if he needs my support and would like for me to go with him or in place of him or if he has it solo and I am good to stay home.
My husband runs interference for me in this way but he isn't social. What I've learned is that people will forgive anti-social behavior from a dad but less so from a mom. So when I just don't have the energy to be friendly and social, I send my DH who will just look at his phone and ignore people, but no one seems to mind. This gives me the break so that I can handle the stuff where one of us really does have to be social. So he handles a lot of pick up and drop off, for instance, but I'm more likely to attend a PTA meeting or show up for a class playdate on a weekend where I know people will expect parents to mingle.
