But still…why would anyone bring their assault rifle to such an event…and if they did, according to Trump, Patel et al, then the police are justified shooting those people simply for bringing them.

Because if Spanberger and the VA legislature has its way they will not be able to take them out of the house ever again. Not for hunting. Not for target practice. Not for any reason.  They want to make it illegal to carry this firearm anywhere in public.
