Bumping this Any updates on the differences?
I’ll begin by pointing out I know Cooper better. Cooper has a nicer building. 2nd Street has more outdoor space. Not sure if there's much difference in academics. Cooper right now is functionally a middle school, though there's slowly adding higher grades.
The middle school is fully enrolled and this year there’s one grade (9th) in the upper school. Next year this year’s 8th graders will move up and there will be 9th and 10th graders, and so on until this year’s 9th graders become Cooper’s first graduating class. The brand new MS building is very nice, but the only outdoor space is a cool rooftop basketball court, small turf area, and garden. I’ve heard a few parents of middle school boys who really need to run around at recess say it’s a challenge for them not having the outdoor space they’d have at 2nd St. If your kid just needs some fresh air and is going to sit and talk at recess, participate in clubs, or hang out in teachers’ classrooms during lunch, it’s fine. Tons of big windows and natural light. I feel like I was in more basement-feeling classrooms when I visited 2nd St. The Kirov building isn’t entirely renovated yet since the HS doesn’t fill it yet, so it has some interesting features. The gym is in there (was a dance studio so at least this year still has barres and mirrors) and so is the library (which has a small stage and a chandelier). The HS doesn’t offer as many electives as 2nd St but that’s entirely a function of there being only one grade right now. Offerings will be equal Some sports, like soccer and Ultimate Frisbee, have a home base at 2nd, but some will be/are based at Cooper, like wrestling. Compare commutes, because most kids are at the age they’re going to be traveling to and from school on their own using public transportation, at least some of the time.
