Dickinson has basically nuked its Greek system, particularly on the fraternity side. I don't understand schools that do this. If an individual fraternity misbehaves -- and I mean really misbehaves, not anodyne stuff like having pledges wear funny costumes to class -- then deal with the misbehaving fraternity on an individual basis. But making the campus climate inhospitable to the entire system like many schools have recently done, such as Dickinson and the previously mentioned Furman, is illogical and counterproductive. Greeks are typically the most involved students on campus, holding most of the leadership positions and giving tons of hours to philanthropic causes. They make the social scene hum. The average GPA, graduation rate, and starting salary is much higher for Greeks than for GDIs. Greek alums are also much more strongly represented among donors, especially big-money donors, than GDI alums. Schools that wage war against the Greek system usually do so at the behest of a few loudmouth activist types and in the process forsake the people who have an actual vested interest in making the campus thrive, both now and in the future.[/quote]
