One thing your S should be aware of--Greeks are strong at IU, stronger than you might think from the percentage of students who belong. My impression--which you should check because my familiarity was a long time ago--is that the percentage of Greeks is higher at Kelley than in the university as a whole. From what I've been told, there are certain frats that are open to OOS students and others that aren't. I don't want to get into a debate about Greek life in this thread. I just think someone interested in IU should be aware of their importance there. See https://studentlife.indiana.edu/involvement-belonging/sororities-fraternities/index.html
I went to IU and so did my nephew (he’s only three years out). Greek life is an option, but it’s there or it’s not. I was heavily involved in the student newspaper, that was my “thing.” Nephew was into theater and intramural swimming; those were his “things.” There are lots of options on a big campus like IU, and if you’re into Greek life, great, if not, great. I don’t see that it’s any more important than any other club, activity, team, or focus any other student has.
