Turn off the news. Focus on what is in front of you.
No every one should be watching the news. Everyone should be concerned. Turning off the news is not going to make things that are happening go away. And the f flu going around!
There is a difference between keeping generally informed and engaging in trauma porn. A lot of people mistake trauma porn for news. Horrible things happen. Horrible things have always happened. You can choose what you focus on and it’s better to pick something that you can actually engage in. Also, make a concerted effort to find positive news. While positives always exist, it’s harder to find because it’s the negative that sells.
What positives? The bell ringers outside stores during holiday time? Girl Scout cookie season? Endless plastic people buy around this time of year? Secret Santa for a person who is ill? Snow icles that fall when you go out to walk? Isolating before going to visit elderly relatives for holidays? What exactly is the good news?
Things I am focusing on this week: Sharing food and drinks with loved ones. That I have a warm, safe home for my family and I to live in. That I still live in a country where I can freely criticize my leaders and their actions. That I can still read and watch others who freely criticize our leaders and their actions, and they are not being imprisoned or even fired or reprimanded, at least for now. The way our school community comes together to raise money and necessities for families in need this time of year. Crocheting winter items for people in my life who want/need them (I like the act of crocheting and find it satisfying to be able to make something useful for someone I care about). My cat and his simple approach to life and the comfort and humor he offers me and the rest of our family. Our little Christmas tree and it's bright lights, the small pile of thoughtfully chosen gifts underneath. Rewatching Better Call Saul and enjoying Bob Odenkirk.
