The BOE is pushing the new options, especially H, for the Crown boundary study. One of the BOE members behind this is actually running for county council in district 1. Option H serves her well, as she can “protect” district 1 neighborhoods from any school boundary change. So, Gaithersburg residents lost a new school, and she can win votes in her county council campaign? This is f-ed up!
I thought that both the Wootton students and the families local to Crown would go to Crown under option H, is that incorrect? Who is getting hurt by this?
Please think about kids in Gaithersburg!
Don't Wootton kids live in Gaithersburg and isn't Crown in Gaithersburg? Are there other Gaithersburg kids that this hurts and if so who? Genuinely asking, I live in Silver Spring and am not very familiar with that part of the county.
In option abcd, close to 2000 Gaithersburg students will move to Crown. Now with Wootton taking Crown, it only has the capacity to take 500 or so from Gaithersburg, and Gaithersburg High will still be 100% capacity. The city is still growing fast. It is UNFAIR to Gaithersburg!
Abcd is based on the old utilization numbers. The new numbers were released after those options came out (which made no sense, why couldn’t they have just waited?) and not only were the overcrowding issues no longer there, they could barely fill Crown. They weren’t just taking 2000 Gaithersburg students and moving them to crown by the way. They were redistricting in a way that made no sense. With this option H, Gaithersburg is actually within capacity. I heard it also leaves the ability to add another 500 seats at crown in the future should there be enough growth to support that.
You can go and check the numbers and compare abcd to h. Gaithersburg high schools are still very crowded. Hundreds of homes are being built there. Where are the kids going?
You say crowded but if you look at the metrics they are still under 100%. The new builds- which developments specifically? The Grove is slated to go to Wootton, at least until they fix the elementary schools and do a study for them. The other builds with high end condos generally don’t have a ton of school aged children. Look I completely understand why people in Crown are upset. They have been expecting a new neighborhood school. Unfortunately it’s part of the public school system and as it’s known to do fairly regularly mcps will change plans out of nowhere. But the neighborhood is losing a lot of goodwill with the nonsense they have been posting on social media. They would rather make sensational statements versus fact based statements. They are losing their credibility and making people mad.
Only Taylor changes plans out of nowhere. The Board of Education has long term Planning Policies. Taylor is just ignoring all the Planning Policies. The Board of Education will get sued and more money will go to outside lawyers making $650 an hour.
Good luck with the lawsuit. Ask clarksburg how well that worked out for them.
