I have a kid who works on the paper at one of these schools. What surprised me is that he has to take the "paper" as an elective for every semester he wants to be involved. Which crowds out a lot of other stuff and means it's not really an EC but a class instead. Is that the case everywhere?
At Walter Johnson it works this way. Students have to take Journalism first and can then take The Pitch class.
Isn't it better if offered as an EC?? If kid wants to work on the paper every year, they miss out on taking other type of classes.
It’s an issue. Same for our class and SGA officers. I think it’s better for the teachers to get paid as a class. And the students learn more. Also I think it serves to limit number of students, for better or worse. WJ has 3,000 students, many vying for top colleges and doing many ECs. I feel like they try to limit students on a lot of things by necessity.
