My kid got 1520, including 800 math. He’s a magnet junior with a 4.9 weighted GPA. It’s a great score but he may want to retake. Is it worth it? He’ll be studying in the STEM field and may apply to highly selective schools like MIT, but because of cost, i expect will end up at a state flagship studying computer science or engineering. Does he need higher than 1520?
Won't get into MIT with a 1520, and frankly, you wouldn't want to. There are so many world class colleges in this country, don't go for the biggest names with 80% of kids with naturally higher aptitude than yours. Encourage them to go where they have to push themselves but not constantly drowning. I've seen so many naturally 1520 equivalent people move up to become CEOs with really successful careers and life, while the 1600 equivalent with MIT-caliber brains work for these CEOs. With a 1520, go for Michigan ED and be done by Christmas. He gets to go to a world class college for engineering with a much more well-rounded experience for 4 years.
This is an obnoxious post. Do you really believe that there is a huge and obvious difference between a 1520 and a 1600? And particularly between a 1520 in one sitting and a 1600 after multiple attempts? Is the 1520 somehow intellectually inferior? Maybe but the SAT is not the test that will show that. Any successful magnet kid, esp if we are talking about Blair would be VERY well prepared for MIT. In fact, the ones I know say that college is much easier and less intense than high school.
Before I had a kid with the exact same SAT though breakout of verbal vs math different- 780 math 740 verbal I would have thought the exact same thing. Mine was also in a magnet. He got into UMD LEP but Scholars not Honors. He had a 4.9? GPA- whatever 1B on transcript and 1 non-honors class (art). He took PE as a senior so that wasn’t part of his EA profile (non honors). My son had 14 s. The problem is that all the kids are applying to the same schools. If 50 kids have a 1570 your 1520 will get cut. It’s just facts.
