My house is messy. When my kids were young I did not have a spare day to make everything presentable to host. By which I mean: All loose objects put away. All papers sorted. Kitchen/dining table empty of stuff, new tablecloth Floor swept/vacuumed. Powder room fully cleaned. That's easily hours more work than a 2-3 hour playmate deserves.
Somehow I don't think most kids care whether all your papers are sorted and if you have a new tablecloth. But clearly it bugs you, so...
PP. I have an open-plan condo townhouse. You can see almost my entire first floor from the front door. I was raised by a SAHM in a much bigger house with formal rooms for entertaining at the front of the house. In my view, my kids had sufficient time to play with their friends at daycare, afterschool program, and in extracurriculars. Didn't need them to randomly come over to sit in the small toy corner of my living room. I still remember the one time I hosted my son's naughty friend at around age 7. I told my son that it was fine to go anywhere in the house except parents' bedroom and bath. Within an hour, I heard running upstairs, popped up, and found naughty kid running through my bedroom on the way to the parents' bathroom. Never invited him over again. I had no time for that kind of stuff.
