As a younger Black woman in a field that was dominated by older White men, my diplomas stopped some ridiculous conversations before they started:

“When you get around to grad school, you’ll learn _____.” (I already had a master’s in the field. And that technique was two decades out of favor.”

“I didn’t know HBCUs offered _____!” (I didn’t go to an HBCU.)

“_____ is confident that you can handle this.” (Maybe our head thinks that because I have an advanced degree focused on this problem that I earned after field work through a leading university?)

In fact, it was my mentor, a White man in his mid 50s who advised me to hang them.[/quote]
