I made a huge mistake. I am in knots about it, and honestly wondering if I need to seek legal counsel. A student in my son’s class has hurt their family member, and I disclosed this info to head of school. I can’t go into details, but I had info that could only have been known by the family and myself. I didn’t realize the family had kept important details from the school. I talk too much, and said to much, and blurted out something the school was previously unaware of. The school has said they will not betray my confidence, but I am panicking. The family is very wealthy and litigious. Not to mention it wasn’t my story to tell. I couldn’t feel more terrible. Of course that’s not entirely true. I am going to feel a million times worse if my screw up makes its way back to the family. This is a prestigious independent school. Not DC. Can I trust the school? Do I need a lawyer?
Similar situation happened in our small private (in a different state). The child (John) sexually assaulted his cousin and John told his classmate (Larlo) when we said something to the effect of “i want to do this (sexual thing) with you and I do it with my cousin”. Larlo’s mom overheard and said something to John’s cousin’s parents. (Everyone knows eachother in the community). Then John’s grandfather shows up at Larlo’s father’s workplace with and NDA and tons of threats. Get a lawyer is the bottom line. In this case the school was not a part of the discussion because everything happened off campus. However, John’s family are huge donors to the school and buy their way in (and out) of everything.
