Many of the younger employees make $57k-$72k. So let’s average to 65k. After taxes, that’s closer to 45k. $3700 per month. Rent leaves $1700 left. Car payment, student loan payment, car insurance, utilities… it’s easy to see where it goes quickly. Most federal employees are not GS 14-15.

Now do the average age.  PP was talking about younger employees.  The federal workforce skews older and those people will likely be better paid.

My household has a fed in it, but we are going to be fine because 1) there's a second income to live off of, and 2) we're older and have commensurate savings.  That doesn't mean I'm incapable of realizing that an unmarried 26 year old in the first couple of years of their career, living in a condo or apartment alone, could very quickly find themselves underwater after missing a few paychecks.[/quote]

My agency has many wage grade workers as well as GS 7-9. They do not earn anywhere near the average salary. My agency also has a lot of GS 13 and above that have been around for 20+ years. Most of these earn significantly more than the average. [/quote]
