The job has become unsustainable, so we can’t keep people in classrooms. And there are very few people willing to work nonstop hours for teacher pay. What we are experiencing is the result of growing teacher expectations without the resources to pull the job off.
Yet, when MCPS wants to do things like pay better wages or hire more people, the county council pulls on the purse strings, makes it insanely difficult to get the money, and then complains that it costs too much. And teachers are *still* overworked and unsupported.
That would be a societal issue that believes they can get everything cheaply. Everyone wants ALL students to be able to reach their potential. But, they don’t want to look at and understand what is required to make that happen. Then when they hear MCPS they believe it’s ridiculously high and should be able to accomplish the above goal. Yet no one is willing to give up anything to make that so. More so, they want things privatized but then don’t understand why specialist won’t work for less pay when they can make more in private industry. Or why teachers won’t continue to work for little money. Or why the BOE has essentially a full time job with not even part time pay.
MCPS teachers are paid well for teaching and equal county jobs.
+1 I don’t understand the constant complaining about being overworked. Teachers here are well compensated.
