[/quote] Your ignorance or non-association/recognition of the epithet as an epithet is immaterial. It's still an epithet. I attended Miami University in the late 1980s/early 1990s. Their moniker was the Redskins, too. For years people protested by the Miami tribe didn't object. Eventually, it came out that the tribe was afraid raising a fuss would jeopardize the scholarship for Miami Indians. When assured that wouldn't happen, they admitted they took offense. Miami changed the name to the Red Hawks.[/quote]
