It is actually quite common for ranked universities to buy/absorb small failing schools nearby. It's the easiest way to expand the campus.
Is Elon, often still considered a safety, strong enough to pull this off? The lifeguard has to be strong to pull a sinking person out of the water.
Are you the same poster that stated "death spiral" and "sticking to its knitting"?
I think "death spiral" is the perfect description for many universities lately. Endowment starts going down. Fewer kids are applying so selectivity gets worse and they have to give out more scholarships, further depleting the endowment. Word slowly starts to get out that things are not going well. As a result, fewer kids apply because they are nervous the school might not even be around in four years for them to graduate. Lather, rinse, repeat. Suddenly no one is applying, endowment is shrinking more rapidly, and the school goes under. If you are not aware of this, you aren't reading the news. Agree with others that Queens is in a nice area. So perhaps there is a real estate play here - they might sell off some of the land. I think this happened with some schools outside Philly. Elon is a solid school. To Ivy-obsessed snobs it might not be great, but there are plenty of fairly strong students who go/went there. I know a few kids who graduated from Elon in the past few years and are doing very well professionally. It isn't Harvard and never will be but most schools aren't.
