The football gods giveth and they taketh away. It is not uncommon for a team to be great one year and not the next. Hope your kid enjoys the school spirit this year. The success on the field won't be the same senior year; just plain odds.
weird comment - success and runs like this become the seeds for a dynasty at top academic schools. Ever hear of Coach K?
My point is that, most often, success does not become the seeds for a dynasty. Sometimes, yes, but most of the time, no. Too many variables. It's fun, to be sure. Enjoy it while it lasts.
Yes enjoy it while it lasts. This means don’t choose Vandy for its football program. Vandy won’t be able to retain Coach Lea past this year. The coach knows Pavia is an outsized reason for their success and he is leaving after this year. Plus the lure of ten million plus a year can’t be resisted. And the facilities at Vandy are not competitive with the SEC. Ditto for NIL money. Vandy deserves credit for their recent success, but it will be very difficult to sustain. And the Coach K reference is inapposite. I was an athletic scholarship guy at Duke. My last two years were Coach K’s first two years. Rough years. But even then, when it comes to basketball, Duke is the single best school to recruit from. This was so even when Coach K had to compete against Dean Smith, not just a coach but a civil rights leader (my brother and father were All Americans in their sports at UNC). Coach K a great coach, but he had the opportunity to recruit great players - really great players. There is no comparison between Duke in basketball and Vandy in football. The economics and requirements of the two sports are vastly different. And football impacts a student body in a significant way as compared to basketball. A reminder - by and large DCUM dislikes athletes and very few really understand athletics. And rarely do the denizens here understand a top flight athletic mindset. And athletes are doubly disliked because they gain admission to schools the coddled offspring of DCUMers don’t get into. This is not the forum for athletics. Go to Vandy if it is the right school for you and you can afford it.
Going to disagree. Coach Lea is a Vanderbilt alum and was a football player there himself. His stated goal is to win a national championship for Vandy. And I think he means it. Absolutely great coach and he’s not going anywhere. The stadium and the facilities have all been upgraded over the past two years. I don’t know about the weight room or the practice field, but Vandy probably has the nicest locker room in the SEC. It’s a legit program. As for recruiting, that’s always tough at a nerd school. But after Vanderbilt beat Alabama last year interest in playing for Vandy shot up. Where else are these guys going to go? Stanford? Northwestern? Duke? They all suck compared to Vandy football. Recruiting was solid this year. This is a much better team than even last year’s team. Of course if Pavia gets hurt they’ll have a problem, but that’s true at every school with a star qb. My kid just graduated from Vanderbilt. Had a great experience. This football thing is very new though. They used to be the doormat in the SEC. So this is all very exciting. They’re likely to be ranked this week and they play Alabama again in 3 weeks. And yes, the football success will definitely lead to even more apps to Vandy. A top 20 school with a winning football team in the toughest conference is a unicorn. But it’s fun. And I think it’s going to last for a while because of Coach Lea, who is not going anywhere.
