My son plays D1 football. He didn't start playing tackle until freshman year (we wouldn't allow him to play before that) and didn't start lifting heavy or working out with a position coach until halfway through his junior year. Playing in college was his goal (not ours) and he worked really hard to get where he is today. He also continued to play multiple sports through high school and credits that to his success as a football player. I'll also add that from what I understand it's all about footwork and "hands."
This --- American football, unlike football football can be learned Freshman year. no need to get contact in earlier. It does not good at all. What you do need is to be athletic. So multiple sports, ability to run longer and short bursts. Working out can start in middle school but I would not go heavy until Freshman year. I would not be too worried about the brain injury. That is a thing but it is not a common issue. You do have to watch the concussions which now get picked up. I would be wary with multiple concussions but absent that I would not be too worried.
