Williamsburg has become a popular retirement destination. Developers have been marketing it in New England as a warmer place to retire but without the headaches (hurricanes, other) of Florida.
I don't understand the "without the hurricanes" comment. I would guess the Outer Banks and Florida (though it seems the St Augustine/Jacksonville area never is hit by an Atlantic hurricane) are the worst for Hurricanes, but coastal VA is definitely within the hurricane band. I mean, my family in Maine worries about hurricanes and they often hit Nova Scotia.
Much more often than not the Gulf Stream pulls hurricanes to the NE and away from coastal virginia. Yes, it has had hurricane hits, but nothing like the frequency of the Outer Banks or Florida.
