My kid is a rising 6th grader in a school doing the pilot. I think it's a terrible idea. My eldest is entering high school and so many of their friends suffered throughout geometry last year. I can't imagine a large number doing algebra 2 in 8th grade. Hard pass.
The kids who can handle Algebra 1 H, and there are a number of them who can, are not going to suffer through Geometry. They might not like it, the math is different then Algebra, but they a likely to do well in the class without it being hard. There are around 300 kids taking Algebra 2 H in 8th grade already, what this program is likely to do is cut down on the number of kids taking Geometry in the summer to get to Algebra 2 in 8th grade. There will be kids selected who are not a great fit, it happens with Algebra 1H in 7th grade, hopefully the schools have a good mechanism for transitioning those kids back into the AAP Math class. But there are kids who will thrive in the more advanced math class. I wish this had been an option for mine.
