The fact that MCPS and the BOE think it's ok for students and staff to feel unsafe at school regularly, year after year, with no consequence or meaningful change is a disgrace. Thomas Taylor, Marcus Jones and Peter Moran should be ashamed of themselves. And the BOE should be held accountable by the County Council for failing in its oversight responsibilities.
What’s your alternative? Bring back suspensions? That’s been shown to be racist. Expulsions? All that does is support the school to corporate prison pipeline. And this is America; every student is innocent until they are proven in a court of law; besides: what about their education? Don’t they have a right to an equal education too? Can’t do that if you are constantly suspending kids (plus their acting out really isn’t their fault. If they got the wrap-around services they deserve then none of this would be an issue.)
Hello. I’m a kid who went to NEC schools all their life. Till now. Come a few weeks, I’ll be in a Catholic high school. I’m a Black American boy, and for 10 years I’ve witnessed fight after fight, curse-out after curse-out, and just overall heinous groundskeeping. Despite the fact that I’m in a group that’s the most suspended, I’ve never been. I go to school, mind my business, come home with no issue. Half the fights are about the dumbest 💩 known to man—stuff like “Oh I stole your 🐕 what are you gonna do about it?” or some dumb Instagram beef. And these kids never get any kind of repercussions. They look at me weird for going to class like a normal human being. I absolutely think that expulsions should be brought back. There’s no reason—with the COL as expensive as it is—that my mom has to pick up a second job to pay for private school just so I can walk to class without seeing a daily fight in the hallway. For people asking if the NEC schools are that bad: they are. For extra info, my journey was this: Burtonsville Elementary (2015–2020) Benjamin Banneker Middle (2020–2023) Paint Branch High School (2023–2025)
You’re switching HS for junior and senior year? What school even has an opening in that grade except for extreme circumstances or kids of families moving into an area?
