You got away with breaking the rules, but they could have denied you.[/quote] NP. On Porter to Canada I paid for the backpack as a cabin bag. It has the same dimensions as a legal hard sided roll on. While they made people who had paid for a wheeled cabin bag put their bags in the hold, they let me put mine in the overhead. Some of the planes have smaller overhead bins though so you can't over stuff it. It doesn't really fit under the seat.[/quote]
