I recently visited a friend in Pittsford, New York (cute suburb of Rochester) and was absolutely charmed. A canal path, lots of cute houses walkable to restaurants, groceries, cafes, and the prices will make your jaw drop in a good way.
I was going to suggest Pittsford, too. Plus Fairport, Victor, and Canandaigua. All Rochester-area with access to excellent health care. These areas are super affordable compared to NY/NJ/CT. Just be sure to consider the property tax. It's very high, especially in Monroe County. Lastly, Rochester tends to consider itself "Western NY," not upstate. In many ways, the vibe is more midwestern than NYC.
It's all upstate.
But there’s NYC upstate which tends to mean Hudson Beacon and Hudson Valley. And then other upstate
