OP again. What about taking a high speed train from Rome to Naples (takes 1h 13 min) and then a 50 minute ferry to Capri? That seems doable for a day trip?
Factor in hotel to train station in Rome, waiting for the train, 1.13 journey time, transfer from Naples station to the ferry terminal (it is walkable for someone like me but not sure about you), waiting for the next ferry, 50 minutes on the ferry. Then? Sure, it can be done, but it's a long/rushed day. I can tell you really want to see this part of the world but with five days you should pick either Rome or Amalfi. Not both.
I kind of like this game, so playing it out based on schedules- I chose a random weekday next month. 8:05 train from Rome to Naples, arrives 9:18 AM. Subway (7 minutes plus 5 minute walk) or taxi to the port (Beverello), you can't make the 9:30 ferry but can make the 10:15, which arrives at 11:05 AM in Capri. For me I love the idea of walk, lunch, explore, early dinner, then head back. Last ferry of the day leaves Capri at 7:55 PM- you could eat a quick (very early by Italian standards) dinner at 6:30 at a place in town near the ferry, finish at 7:30, then make the ferry. Arrives at the Naples port at 8:45, which means you miss the 8:30 train and have to wait until the 10:18 train which gets back to Rome at 11:30. So you basically have 7 hours to explore Capri before making your way back to the main town for dinner and catching the ferry. Up to you if all this is worth it- for me it wouldn't be.
I've been to Capri a few times but it's been at least 15 years since my last trip. In the summer we swam. In the winter it was mostly closed but we walked to the Tiberus palace ruins and had lunch. The shops in the villages were all superexpensive touristy stuff. Not sure what you can do for seven hours in Capri to justify the hassles of a very long day. You'll end up doing a lot of sitting around, waiting, fearing delays, rushing. The stretch of Naples between the ferries and the train station isn't interesting and from what I recall, limited on food options (was in Naples two years ago). The whole bay is beautiful but I can understand a day trip to Naples for the museums or Pompeii, but Capri is probably not worth the effort.
