I think if you want something quaint walkable and historic, it's pretty much either Gtown or Old town Alexandria and some blocks in DC proper with nice victorian homes and mansions.  DC burbs are not quaint, old/historic at least the inner burbs, maybe if you go a bit further out there are some places that feel like towns, I am not from DC area, but this is the impression I got.  All of these inner burb commercial areas are relatively new and have been built with car use in mind.[/quote]
