Yes, overall South Carolina (and North Carolina) have a much lower cost of living than the DC area, but there is widespread rural poverty in both states that drives those numbers down. While the cost of living in a high performing schools district will be lower than DC, it's not so much lower to compensate for the huge paycut one has to take to teach in the Carolinas. Pay in North Carolina is among the worst in the country. Even South Carolina pays more.[/quote]
