They still can't mandate that cities do ICE's job for them to help round up illegals. Local police doesn't have any jurisdiction over immigration issues. Nor is ICE providing any funding or resources to deal with it.
They do not have to release criminals when ICE asks them to keep holding them until they can pick them up, about two days. They choose to let them go, and some Democrats take active measures to help them avoid ICE.
Who pays for those two days? That’s called an Unfunded Mandate and impinges on state sovereignty. Why do you love Big Government?
I thought Merrick Garland took it to the Supreme Court that states had no right to defend their borders WRT immigration and it was a federal issue. Now you want to do a 180 and plea state sovereignty and I guess the tenth amendment is out the window? Make up your mind.
Yes, it is a federal issue if you want local police departments to detain an illegal immigrant for multiple days at the cost of the local taxpayer while ICE gets its house in order to pick him up. That’s the Unfunded Mandate on localities and states. The entire time ICE has been going on Fox News and hyping up rightwingers, they could’ve been monitoring databases and filing paperwork with judges that puts a felony hold on repeat offenders. The absurdity of the situation is that (1) ICE has failed for decades to do this very basic law enforcement work and (2) they want a gold star for the work they should already be doing! To be clear, all localities should be honoring felony warrants.
Agree. They had the means to do this before - getting a warrant. FWIW, I'm glad that these criminals are being deported. But, why didn't ICE do this before?
It was a smaller number. This is people who have illegally immigrated more than once.
I doubt the numbers were much smaller a year ago.
