Check Instagram too for how many posts mention competitions and finals and who placed. Best thing to do is just talk to the school. Something to keep in mind is that a director might be 100% accurate in saying that the competitions are completely voluntary but if most kids in the school do it, it's hard to resist it with peer pressure and perceptions of reduced status with the director(s) for roles and attention.
