I hated the storyline of the gorgeous young woman so ready to accept anything and put up with anything for an unattractive grumpy, dysfunctional old guy - could not be more cliche.  But this was held up as the big romance of the show.  [/quote]

I heard an interview with Mike White talking about this today. He said when he was in Thailand he encountered a lot of relationships with an older, wealthy, balding guy (a "loser back home") with a super hot young woman. He describes being in an elevator with one such couple and the woman is showing her boyfriend pictures from some runway show or something and White could tell the guy just didn't care at all. So the relationship is transactional -- he's getting a hot young girlfriend, she's getting a free ride -- but there's no connection, no real love.

So White thought it would be interesting to imaging what would happen in a relationship like that if, almost by accident, they developed real love and connection. Like the idea is that Rick and Chelsea started out just like Greg/Gary and Chloe, but somewhere in there they catch feelings and it becomes something more than a transactional relationship. And that was the idea behind it.

For me, it didn't totally work. I think because the whole plot line with Rick wanting to avenge his dad just didn't work for me, it felt like a soap opera storyline and I didn't buy it. But I do think it was an interesting idea to explore and ultimately I *did* buy that Chelsea had real, meaningful feelings for this guy and also that he loved her in a meaningful way that was totally separate from her youth and appearance. I didn't like where it went because I found Ricks story arc way too melodramatic. But the stuff with him and Chelsea, and her convincing him that they belonged together, and him realizing he felt the same way? I found that aspect of it compelling.[/quote]

Fair enough.  Would white lotus ever feature a storyline like that with the genders reversed, where true spiritual love develops that is "totally separate from youth and appearance" with a woman in her 40s or 50s?   We get Parker posey, who is amazing but basically asexual in the show.  [/quote]
