I drive my car until it costs more to fix it than it is worth. No matter how many miles are on it. My car is 7 years old but does not have 100k on it. DH’s car is 17 years old and has over 100k. A reliable used car is, in my mind, worth a lot more to me than the blue book value. But I’m not a fancy car person even though I could probably afford one; so ymmv.
The bolded above is our approach, too. One of our cars is 9 years old with over 150k miles (DH drives a lot for work), that so far hasn’t given us any major issues. We stay on top of maintenance, which is still much cheaper than a car payment.
Same here. Around 100k I start to mentally earmark money in my budget for a new car in the next couple of years.
