Both my kids were self taught readers who did so by whole word recognition, but they both have exceptional visual memory skills. Phonics would have infuriated them. [/quote] They still need to know how to break up unknown words especially longer multi syllabic words. Plus they need to be able to spell those longer words. [/quote]
