“Not a great school zone” in Arlington is still far better than many parts of the country.
Not sure this is true. What’s good about the title one classes in Arlington is that they only have 15-17 kids per class. My “good school” has 27 in their class. It’s ridiculous.
Class size does not determine how much kids learn. It's the class environment and the student quality. Even a bad teacher can teach well-behaved, focused students something. And a good teacher can't teach poorly behaved, unfocused students anything. However, even one disruptive or below level student can grind things to a halt for everyone.
+100. And I see such “grinding to a halt” daily. All of the funding in the world can’t improve scores if you can’t get the kids to 1) attend school regularly 2) behave respectfully 3) be removed if they continue to impede others’ learning. You also can’t improve scores when it is virtually impossible to remove a bad teacher. Our system is broken and doesn’t just need more, more, more $. It needs to be rebuilt from the ground up — vocational schools, alternative schools for poor behavior, LESS tech until it can be respected/used appropriately, and perhaps better connection to the school. Another thread asked whether kids in the US should clean their schools. If they aren’t learning to respect common spaces at home, perhaps they do need to learn it at school. You wouldn’t believe what teachers see in a day — halls trashed, food thrown on purpose and left on the floor, computers taken apart with keys missing, classroom supplies defaced. Give me a break if you think this should go on.
