I have a similar question about ambien. I have some left from a prescription from about eight years ago. I occasionally have trouble sleeping and wonder if there’s any harm in taking one.
Depends why you have trouble sleeping. If it's a panic attack with some physical symptoms like shortness of breath, palpitations, your mind racing, catastrophizing, etc, then it works great for this, it's what it's for. It's meant to be taken occasionally no matter what the bottle says. If it's just insomnia, I'd try to find out what the cause is, can be hormonal changes (a big deal in perimenopause), thyroid issues or some new habits, supplements, medications. I'd try melatonin first and other natural ways. Then go to the neurologist if this doesn't work and do sleep studies.
