DCUM is a wire monkey mother compared to those kind of communities.
Love this. I've said this before, but I've found DCUM to be an unusually hostile corner of the internet. Every Internet forum has its fair share of jerks, but for some reason there is a strong contingent here that is so intentionally mean. It doesn't bother me, obviously, because I don't really care about randos on the internet, but it does make me wonder if DC is a particularly nasty place to live.
DC generally is opinionated. At least the over 40 are. You can ignore the a$$holes, but occasionally there are some good points among the snark. I like Caroline Hax, but she's been doing this for a very long time. I guess that's the career ambition for this job - become Ann Landers and go on forever. It's an easy paycheck and you can focus on the rest of your life. Good for her. But for readers, eh. You need some serious loyalty to forestall the desire for something new and fresh among readers. Being a columnist can be tough. If I were emperor of media, I'd change it every five years. Fresh voice. New perspectives. I look at the longtime columnists at the NY Times and Post and think JC, retire already. I already know what you're going to say. It's not interesting.
