OP, Is this your thread? https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1229805.page Either way I stand by my suggestion you urge him to be evaluated by a doctor this could be a symptom of something such as a tumor, the start of cognitive decline or mental illness.
OP. Yup. I thought he had moved on from the aliens stuff but the last couple weeks it came out again. And now I’m especially worried he’s falling for very obvious hoaxes AND he gets irrationally angry at me for not agreeing. Weirdly enough, this is sort of a trend where he’ll become obsessed with something and get angry if my opinion differs. A couple years ago he became obsessed with the Elizabeth Holmes case and would get SO angry if I had a different opinion.
OP, your real problem is communication, isn’t it? He can’t have a rational discussion without flying off into crazy. I’d want to address that first and then address the willingness to give into hoaxes and conspiracies second. When you get to that stage, remember the mantra that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Jumping to “it must be aliens” when you can’t figure something out is intellectually lazy. Aliens are the least likely explanation for just about anything but people seem really motivated to believe it despite the absence of clear evidence. (And before people start citing Congressional hearings: that’s the appeal to authority fallacy. Weak evidence? Appeal to ignorance fallacy. Lots of people believe this? Bandwagon fallacy. Billions of planets? Misuse of statistics.). If we’re going to go anecdotal, how about this: why is it that in the past few decades when almost everyone in the planet has acquired a high res video camera in their pocket has it somehow become less likely to report UFO sightings?
Fallacy fallacy. If you dismiss everything that isn't direct disclosure from God on high as "fallacy", then all you can say is no one knows anything about anything.
