As a gen z, I think Wickline is hilarious. I’ve been following her on tiktok for years and love her skits. I was so excited when I started season 50 and saw that she was in it. She has a substantial following on TikTok which I think clearly speaks to her talent - or at the very least her draw - as a comedian regardless of her being a nepo baby. Her nepo baby status meant nothing in regards to her gaining followers on Tiktok - nobody on that platform would care to watch her if they didn’t like her content regardless of her “connections.” And she built a large audience prior to joining SNL so it’s not like her popularity came after joining the show. Her humor is certainly an acquired taste, but there’s definitely a market for it. Because the reception to her was so positive on Tiktok and from people I’ve shown her skits to in my own life, I was shocked to see boards like this talking about how unfunny they think she is (even after viewing her work outside of the show). In my opinion her tiktok skits have been more consistent in quality than the skits SNL has put out the last few years. That being said, I don’t think they’ve utilized her very well so far this season and it’s clear she’s still finding her footing. I also didn’t think her song was particularly funny. But for me it’s not her delivery that is the issue (her deadpan awkward delivery is part of her appeal), it’s the quality of SNLs writing recently. Some skit ideas are so unfunny, stupid or uninspired that no amount of comedic skill can save them (recent skits like Sushi Glory Hole which even made Andy seem unfunny and the giant horse skit and naked garbage truck skit from season 49 come to mind). I also question whether the writers know how to implement her well in their skits/play to her strengths. I find her much funnier on Tiktok where she’s writing her own material. That’s just my opinion.Sorry for the long post, I just thought I’d offer a different take on the matter. I’m overall just disappointed to see this kind of backlash to her. I really do think she’s very talented. :(
? ICYMI: she’s supposed to be writing skits for herself.
Np. She’s been on the show for three weeks. Can we cut her a little slack about not getting her own skits on the show just yet? Jeez.
