Ugh, these public requests for prayers and the subsequent responses turn my stomach. They're so impersonal and perfunctory, like prayer is something you check off your to-do list before moving on to the "I'm a manwhore, ask me anything" thread. (And I'm an atheist.)
Not shocked that you are an atheist. Ive never met a compassionate atheist. The kid is dead. His family is in pain. Leave the thread alone if you disagree. His death and their suffering should not be the place you pontificate about the evils of prayer. And no I'm not religious, but this is not the place for your self-centered shit.
Then you need to get out more. I think it is very unfair for you to think that those of us who don't pray, don't show compassion. There are LOTS of other ways in which I show compassion for those hurting - I volunteer at shelters, I donate lots of money, I am involved with the community. It is this notion that praying is the answer that irks some of us. You offering up a quick prayer is no more compassionate then me thinking of this poor family and silenting hoping for some peace for them.
I don't pray. But this thread is not the place to be proseltyzing for nonbelief. Do it elsewhere.
